Making Senctences
In each game mode you will choose words from those available on screen to make a correct English sentence. When you are ready you can send your sentence and the game will accept or reject your sentence. Don’t worry if your sentence gets rejected, you can make some changes and try again as many times as you need. If your sentence is accepted, and depending on the game mode you are playing, you will receive points or coins. When your sentence is accepted, all of the words that you used are removed, and new words will be dropped in to replace them. Also, in most game modes, when the game moves to a new round, any words in the bottom most row of the grid will be dropped to make room for new words. If you can’t make a sentence from the words available, you can pass the round instead. The game will move to the next round and the words on the bottom row of the grid will be replaced. It will cost you one coin to pass the round, and you won’t get any coins or points back.
Game Points
In most game modes you will receive points for making sentences. Each word in a sentence is worth a set number of points. The points value of each word is displayed under the word in its box. Higher level words are, in general, worth more than lower-level words and there are even some very special words with very high point values.
Game Coins
Each sentence you complete will earn you one coin, but there are many other ways to get coins. As your sentence gets longer it will earn you bonus coins. One more after 4 words, two more after 8, and if you can get to 10 words or more you will get 5. Sometimes words will appear with a coin icon. These are bonus words and using them in a sentence will get you their points value in coins. There are several ways to spend your coins during a game.
Spending Coins
As soon as you have collected your first coin you can start spending them! You can buy words, save words, modify words and buy special words.
Game Modes
Normal Play
Normal Play is the standard game. You will advance for 30 rounds with the goal of collecting as many points as possible before the end. There is no way to fail in normal play, but if you can’t make any sentences and have no coins to pass a round, you will have to restart. In normal play you have access to buying, saving and modifying words, as well as buying special words. High scores in normal play can become “All Time” high score statistics.
Challenge Play
Challenge play is similar to normal play but with added layers of difficulty. At each of rounds 10, 20 and after the final round 30, if you do not have enough points then you will fail the challenge. There are four levels of challenge play, with increasingly demanding points targets to beat. You can buy, save and modify words, and buy special words. You will need to make skilful use of point bonus words to achieve the highest targets. High scores in challenge play can become “All Time” high score statistics.
Time Attack
Time attack looks and feels like normal play, until you notice the timer ticking down! In this mode you begin with 20 seconds on the clock. If the clock gets to zero, the game is over and you will have failed the time attack. For each sentence you complete, an additional 20 seconds will be added to the timer. You can access buy, save, modify words and special words. High scores in Time Attack can become “All Time” high score statistics.
Block Attack
Block Attack is a very different challenge from the other modes. In this mode you are confronted by a large grid of words, initially from the level 1 words set, and a target number to clear. Words can only be used once and will not be replaced. After you have cleared enough words, you have the option to level up. When you level up, all the words are replaced, and the target is reset higher. After 3 rounds the word set will change to level 2 words. The final 3 rounds use the level 3 word set. There are no points in Block Attack. Your final score is how many blocks you cleared in total during the game, plus the number of coins you have remaining. You can also use the coins during the game to modify words in the grid. Many more words are available for modifying in Block Attack than in other game modes. High scores and other statistics from Block Attack games are not eligible to become “All Time” high score statistics.
Free Play
While Free Play might look just like normal or challenge play, there are many differences. Free Play does not have a final round (unlike the other games that end after round 30), and you can play for as many rounds as you like. There are no points requirements to get passed any round. Unlike the other game modes, you choose the word set at the beginning, and it will not change at any point thereafter, unless you select to choose the level from the game menu. Changing the game level will however, reset your coins and points to zero and begin the game again at round 1. In Free Play you can use coins to buy, save, modify words and buy special words. High scores and other statistics from Free Play games are not eligible to become “All Time” high score statistics.
Advanced Concepts
Buying Words
When you buy words, a menu will open to let you choose from the set of words available. These are common words that you will probably use very often. When you buy a word, you can choose an inventory slot to store it. If there is no space in the inventory, you will have to replace one of the words you already have stored with the new word.
Saving Words
When you save words, you can choose to take a word from the currently available list and move it to your inventory. You might do this to save a bonus word for later, or to keep a useful word for being lost when the round advances. In any case, for normal words you will have to pay 1 coin to save them, and for bonus words you will have to pay 2 coins. If your inventory is full you will have to choose one of the currently stored words to be replaced.
Modifying Words
Many words that appear in-game can be modified (sometimes in many different ways). When you choose to modify words, the game will highlight all the available words that can be modified. Choose one of those to see your choices. Modifying words always costs one coin, and any bonus words you modify will not lose their bonus. It is also possible to modify words that you have stored in your inventory. Be careful, as you may only modify a word once, so make your choice well. You might also find that after modifying a word its points value has changed…
Special Words
The special words are a list of words with point values far larger than other words. They can cost quite a lot of coins to buy, but if you use them well you could soon be making sentences worth hundreds of points. Special words are worth 20, 45, 70 or 100 points. Some special words can also be modified, and their modified point values are the same.
Bonus Words
Some words will appear in the grid with one of two bonus symbols. The coin symbol signals that a word is a coin bonus. Using it in a sentence will earn you the word’s points value in coins (so a 5-point word with this bonus will get you an extra 5 coins!). The star symbol signals that word is a points bonus. Using it in a sentence will double the points value of the whole sentence. When used in combination with high-level or special words, this can lead to some very high value sentences.
